Background
At the time of Sherry’s murder, Bob Johnson was serving as a Criminal Investigator with the U.S. Department of Treasury. He was married to Michele Comer (then Johnson), Sherry’s best friend and longtime roommate. Bob’s reputation was complicated, colleagues and acquaintances often described him as a womanizer. When Michele confronted him about rumors linking him to Sherry, Bob admitted to an affair, but insisted it was with another woman, Chris Dorland.

The Hot Tub Night
Bob was at the center of one of the more bizarre incidents in Sherry’s story. At a party hosted by Michele, Sherry joined Bob in a hot tub while her husband Don slept on the couch inside. When Michele saw them together, she shouted from the deck. The confrontation escalated into violence, Bob reportedly flew into a rage and choked Michele against a wall. Don woke up in the chaos, and both he and Sherry left immediately.

After the Murder
Years after the killing, cold case investigators reached out to Bob and Michele for background information. By then, Michele and Bob’s marriage was unraveling. They divorced in 2008. Following the split, Bob allegedly called Michele with a cryptic statement about a “deathbed confession,” which she believed might be tied to Sherry’s case.

Lingering Questions
Some of Sherry’s family members noted how closely Bob’s appearance matched the composite sketch of the gunman. They questioned whether his connection to Sherry had been deeper than he admitted, and whether jealousy, suspicion, or a hidden fling might have played a role.

Later Years
Bob’s life after Michele was turbulent. He remarried twice, but also faced a string of legal issues tied to drugs and domestic assaults. His professional career ended under a cloud,  he was said to have been fired from the Treasury Department after an affair with a coworker and a threatening phone call. Bob’s life ended in 2023, reportedly from complications related to alcoholism.
