AL Barnett
Fiance of Sherry
Father of Baby Kelsey
The Connection
Sherry met Al through Don. At the time, Don and Al had briefly worked together selling water purification systems while Don and Sherry were still married. Not much is known about Al’s life before then, except that he had two children of his own, A.J. and Ashley.
The Affair
What began as an affair between Sherry and Al escalated quickly. Their relationship became public, and eventually the two became engaged. The baby Sherry carried, who was taken off life support just days after her murder was confirmed to be Al’s child.
Dark Side of the Relationship
Behind closed doors, Al’s behavior was troubling. Sherry’s friends recall disturbing incidents — one even described Al locking Sherry out of the house completely naked. The relationship, though passionate, was marred by abuse and volatility.
The Box on the Porch
One of Sherry’s friends believed Don discovered the affair when Al left a box of Sherry’s personal items on Don’s porch, underwear, love letters, and other belongings. It looked less like a gesture of love and more like a calculated act of revenge, escalating the hostility between the two men.
The Night of the Murder
Al later told investigators he first learned of the killing while driving north on I-95, listening to the radio. Hearing that a pregnant woman in the Newington area had been gunned down, he claims he “just knew” it was Sherry. Instead of heading directly to the hospital, Al exited at Woodbridge, drove 15 minutes out of his way to Sherry’s sister’s home, and only then went with her family to the hospital.
Aftermath
Initially, Al cooperated with investigators, even submitting to a polygraph. But within six months of Sherry’s death, he was in a new relationship, one that has lasted more than 27 years. In that time, Al has never reached out to Sherry’s family. For over two decades, he has ignored every attempt at contact, leaving the family with more questions than answers.
